Update on officer involved shooting back in

On March 20th at 8:51am officers with the Reno Police Department responded to the 700 block of South Meadows Parkway for a subject reportedly trespassing. The officer located the suspect a short distance away in the 9800 block of Double R Blvd. The suspect was uncooperative and an altercation ensued between the suspect and the officer. The officer suffered injuries and in fear of his life began discharging his firearm, a bullet striking the suspect. Additional officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

The officer was reportedly in stable condition, and the condition of the subject was still being evaluated by medical personnel.

Here’s an update on the case as of May 15th –

Further investigation has been done and continues, since the incident.

It was learned that during the altercation, the suspect gained control of the officer’s wood baton and struck the officer multiple times in the head; resulting in injuries to the officer. The officer was able to access his firearm during the altercation and fired one round, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was later identified as Ronald Akers, 42. Since the incident Akers has been recovering from his wound at a local hospital. On May 14th, Akers was released from the hospital and transported to the Washoe County Jail.
Akers was booked in to the jail for Attempted Murder with a Deadly Weapon, Battery on a Protected Person, Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Obstructing and Resisting with a Deadly Weapon.
